Hour 23 Challenge [Apr. 11th, 2010|04:32 am]
[right now i'm feeling... |tiredtired]
[sounds in my head |coldplay-amsterdam]

Well, i've had some more mint oreos and a soda and am feeling a bit more awake than 45 minutes ago. took me a while to find my favorite cliffhanger of the day for this hour's challenge.

from 'darkly dreaming dexter' by jeff lindsay

'tell me about the runaways,' we said.
'okay' he breathed.
'you took those girls.'
'yes...'
'how many?'
he just breathed for a moment. his eyes were closed and i thought i might have lost him a little early. he finally opened his eyes and looked at me. 'five,' he said at last. 'five little beauties. i'm not sorry.'
'of course you're not,' we said. i placed a hand on his arm. it was a beautiful moment. 'and now, i'm not sorry either.'
i stuffed the plastic into his mouth and went back to work. but i had really only just started to recapture my rhythm when i hear the guard arrive downstairs.

(and it was either this scene or the ending one, but i thought the ending one kindof defeated the purpose of the challenge lol)

Hour 22 [Apr. 11th, 2010|03:33 am]
[right now i'm feeling... |sleepyloopy]
[sounds in my head |norah jones--back to manhattan]

oh. my. gawd.

i am so loopy and tired, but i FINALLY finished 'order of the phoenix'. of course, i loved it, so much more detail and adventures than they can potray in a 2 hour movie. definitely time for a break. i think i'm pretty much only staying awake until hour 23 for the challenge--hosted by my friend over at http://aliciablade.livejournal.com/

i am really suprised at my stamina. i woke up around 8.30 today (which i think was hour 3 or so here) and started reading. and i've been reading pretty much ALL DAY LONG. i didn't expect to stick with it so well! along with finishing 'darkly dreaming dexter' and 'order of the phoenix' i did start 'the time traveller's wife'. after reading the first two chapters, i know i'm gonna love it, but for the last few hours my attention span will not be strong enough for such a twisty book. think i'll grab a simpler, easy book.

Hour 17 Mini Challenge [Apr. 10th, 2010|10:17 pm]

mini challenge here ---> http://literatehousewife.com/2010/04/get-the-heck-out-of-here-mini-challenge/

this was one of my favorite books as a kid. i read it all year round. there was just something about it, the pictures and descriptions of christmas goodies and treats, the two precocious chipmunk kids (nina and nutley) who i likened to my younger sister and myself, and the overall good feeling that always came with reading this. plus, when i was really little and my mom used to read this to us, she used the funnest voices.

my mom still has this book somewhere, and it is tattered and has been thoroughly loved by myself and my two younger sisters!

one of my favorite books of all time is ‘redeeming love’ by francine rivers. it tells the story of a woman who was forced into prostitution in the old west. a godly man sees her one day and god tells him to marry her. it is sort of a retelling of the book of Hosea, where god tells Hosea to marry an unfaithful woman to tell a story to the israelites. in this book, the woman goes through a lot, bitter as she is from her life, and finally succumbs to love and freedom. its such a great lovestory on so many levels. thinking about it, i could see maybe kiera knightly playing the part pretty well, or kate winslet–both could convey the tough-as-nails, wounded woman, as well as the unfolding of her heart.

First Finished Book [Apr. 10th, 2010|06:46 pm]

[sounds in my head |sarah fimm--mercury]

Just finished 'Darkly Dreaming Dexter' took me, oh, about 4 odd hours, with breaks inbetween to do challenges and check email, etc.

it was a good book. the showtime series is very different (more dramatic, mysterious and twisty). so, since i've seen the series already, it made the book seem almost like a different thing entirely. this is certainly a case of taking an *idea* from a book and expounding upon it--in a really good way. definitely a good read, and a relatively quick one too.

Hour 12 mini-challenge meme [Apr. 10th, 2010|06:09 pm]

[sounds in my head |imogen heap--shh]

1. What are you reading right now?
still trudging through the last fifty pages of Darkly Dreaming Dexter

2. How many books have you read so far?
i have read two books, but not finished either one (YET!!)

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?
The Time Traveller's Wife

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?
nope, i'm a lazy bum everyday, the only difference is that i'm reading all day instead of partaking in my other numerous hobbies :)

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those?
no, not really. been taking breaks now and again though.

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?
how much i am enjoyng doing nothing but read. i always forget how much i love escaping into a book until i pick one up and disappear for a while

7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
not sure... seeing as this is my first one, i'm just trying to enjoy myself!

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?
i would plan out a bit more, and definitely clean my house beforehand so i can lounge around reading in a cleaner space lol

9. Are you getting tired yet?
i am a little bit, i might take a nap in a while, but naps usually make me more tired in the end. so i think a pot of coffee will be brewing within the next ten minutes

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered?
pick books you've been looking forward to, and let yourself switch often so you don't get bored

Mini Challenge--Soundtrack Song [Apr. 10th, 2010|02:34 pm]

book title: Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
song title: 'Somewhere a clock is ticking' by Snow Patrol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLg7zXlgNus

as i was thinking of what would be a good song for anything i'd been reading today, my pandora station played the perfect song. i've been reading "darkly dreaming Dexter" for the last 2 hours and am halfway through. granted, i've watched the show so i know the premise and the characters pretty well already. as soon as this song started playing, it clicked. Dexter has this 'dark passenger' inside of him, and at the point i'm at in the book at this very moment, it is speaking to him again. telling him it is time to kill again. the repetition of 'i could do most anything to you' in the song is so fitting--Dexter is a serial killer, he has no conscience, no feelings. the song also has such a creepy vibe with the breathy, repetitive vocals, which builds and builds until it finally ends.
